How would we be getting through quarantine without social media, the internet, and an endless stream of TV shows to watch? Sea’s Monica Paolini was thinking about the ways women of prior generations passed the time, pandemic or not, and it was mostly through crafts. They gathered together and whiled away the hours by quilting, knitting, crocheting, and chatting, creating beautiful things in the process. Surely they didn’t get bored as easily or quickly as we do, either, constantly itching for the next thing to hold our attention.
Paolini didn’t have to look very far to recreate a craft circle in 2020. Her son’s nanny is a crochet expert and has lent her skills to many Sea items over the years, so Paolini brought her and her friends into the studio to create dozens of new pieces for the spring collection. The ladies transformed bright scraps of floral, plaid, and gingham fabric into pillow-y quilted coats and patchwork hoodies, and used fluffy yarns to crochet trims on dresses and sweater vests that resembled granny squares. Craft has always been a part of Sea’s vernacular, but here it felt particularly special and homespun. To reflect the care and friendship stitched into each piece, Paolini photographed the collection on a group of friends outside of Copenhagen—“real women” who wore the pieces with confidence and ease, underscored by (what else?) foam sport sandals.
It was easy to pick out the future best-sellers here; Sea is known for its collars and layering pieces, and a voluminous cotton dress with a removable sweater vest moved the concept forward. (Bonus: By adding or removing the vest in winter or summer, it’s truly seasonless.) A blouse version with airy balloon sleeves will be a hit; tuck it into jeans or acid-wash denim shorts, as it’s styled here. The quilted coats are established winners, too; similar ones from the pre-fall collection have been sold out everywhere and make frequent appearances on Instagram. They check all the boxes of a keep-forever hero piece: comfort, utility, and interest.
