Talk about tone-setting.
Jian Castillo scored a minute into the game and added a second tally later in the first half as St. Joseph by-the-Sea rolled to a 2-0 CHSAA A quarterfinal win over visiting St. Peter’s Saturday in Huguenot.
The Vikings, who also received primary assists from Rory Lilley and Johnathan Williams, advanced to Wednesday’s semifinals and will meet Monsignor McClancy in Queens at 12:15 p.m.
Sea wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as Lilley won the ball before playing a short pass to Castillo on the left side of the box. Castillo proceeded to cut across to the right and, despite the presence of two defenders, a buried a shot just under the crossbar from 15 yards out.
The Vikings used solid ball movement again at the midway point of the first half as freshman Williams took a sideline pass from defender Anthony Taravella, then played a through ball to Castillo.
The senior dribbled to his right before unleashing a blast that found the twine from 10 yards out.
"We moved the ball well,'' praised Sea coach Sandy Rapaglia. "(And because of it), we created some great opportunities to score.''
Sea’s defense, led by senior Nick DiMonda, juniors Ryan Gilbert and Taravella and sophomore Mossimo Giunta, played well as a unit to deny the Eagle a score. Senior AJ Montana recorded the shutout in net.
"Our defense was relentless tonight,'' added Rapaglia. "They didn’t allow a very good St. Peter’s team to get anything easy.''
