Naval and Coast Guard crews have called off a two-day search for a missing Canadian sailor who disappeared into icy Pacific waters off the coast of San Francisco, authorities said Wednesday.
Duane Earle, a longtime member of the Royal Canadian Navy, reportedly fell overboard from a Canadian warship Monday about 575 miles west of the California coast, navy officials said in a statement. The 47-year old Winnipeg native is presumed dead after a 30-hour search that included members of the Alameda Coast Guard.
“This decision was not taken lightly; however, after extensive coverage of the search area we have not been able to locate him,” said a statement from Brian Santarpia, a Canadian navy commander. The statement said the decision was made “with a heavy heart.”
Rescue crews searched a patch of ocean roughly the size of Delaware, officials said. The search included several aircraft and ships, organized by the U.S. Coast Guard’s Joint Rescue Coordination Center in Alameda.
Earle was last seen Monday on the HMCS Winnipeg which was returning from a three-month deployment in Asia, where it monitored North Korea’s nuclear weapons program and took part in the multinational Operation NEON maritime monitoring program, a Canadian Navy statement said.
While the search for Earle has concluded, the navy will continue to investigate the circumstances of his disappearance, officials said.
