Sun, sea and sand – but no holidaymakers to enjoy them. In our latest edition of Europe Now, Catherine Nicholson travels to what's normally a holiday hotspot – Mallorca, in the Balearic Islands – to find out how the Covid-19 pandemic has impacted daily life, the tourism industry and the wider economy.
We get the lowdown from the perspective of Spain's governing party (PSOE), speaking with Spanish MEP Alicia Homs Ginel, from the Socialists & Democrats group of the European Parliament, who explains how European funds are being spent in Spain and in the Balearics.
We also bring you reports from around Spain, with Luke Brown taking a closer look at the impact of the pandemic on the hugely important tourism sector – about the scale of the losses, as well as the opportunities for change that the Covid-19 crisis has created.
Staying in the Balearics, we see how the world of office work has also been affected by the coronavirus crisis and how working from home for so-called digital nomads has created opportunities for a desk in the sun.
The pandemic has also been a breeding ground for fake news, especially in Spain, as Céline Schmitt investigates.
Show presented by Catherine Nicholson, produced by Johan Bodin, Perrine Desplats and Mathilde Bénézet, filmed on location by Stéphane Bodenne, with Luke Brown and Céline Schmitt.
