ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – The UConn men's golf team made the biggest move of any team up the team leaderboard on the final day of the competition to capture a Top Five finish at the Sea Palms Invitational.
The 16-team tournament, sponsored by Western Carolina, was played Thursday through Saturday at the Sea Palms Resort on St. Simons Island, Ga. It was UConn's first stroke-play tournament after opening the season with two match-play events.
UConn was in ninth place after each of the first two rounds of the tourney, but the Huskies' aggregate 297 on Saturday tied for the third-best team score of the day to jump the Huskies to fifth. UConn's 29-over 288-296-297=881 was behind tournament champion Jacksonville State, Appalachian State, Chattanooga and Western Kentucky.
Individually, UConn was led by freshman Caleb Manuel (Topsham, Me.), who led the entire 88-player field with 42 pars. Manuel's 5-over, 71-70-77=218 tied for 12th place.
Also for the Huskies, senior Rodrigo Sanchez (Santo Domingo, D.R.) finished in a tie for 29th with a 10-over, 71-74-78=223, junior Jared Nelson (Rutland, Vt.) shot a 12-over, 80-75-70=225 and freshman Jimmy Paradise (Tampa, Fla.) shot a 12-over, 73-79-73=225, to each finish in a tie for 37th, and freshman Tommy Dallahan (Simsbury, Conn.) finished in a tie for 42nd with a 14-over, 73-77-77=227.
UConn continues its season on March 15-16, when it participates in the Bash at the Beach, a tournament sponsored by Appalachian State, at the Surf, Golf & Beach Club at Myrtle Beach. S.C.
