Seaside Aquarium staffers on Monday rescued an ailing sea otter, a rare sight on the Oregon coast.

Aquarium staff got a call Monday afternoon about the sea otter, which was stranded at the south end of the Manzanita beach. Aquarium officials said the otter looked like it was struggling and was showing signs of possible neurological problems.

Aquarium staffers rescued the otter, and it was later moved from the aquarium to a rehabilitation center in Washington. The otter died shortly after being transferred.

Staffers believe the otter had a protozoal infection.

Aquarium staff said Monday’s call marked the first time they responded to a report of a sea otter on the coast.

Sea otter sightings have been rare since the species went extinct in Oregon in the early 1900s from being hunted for their fur, aquarium officials said.

There have been significant, unsuccessful attempts to reintroduce the sea otter to the Oregon coast, according to aquarium staffers, and another plan is in the works.
