Yaku is Shedd’s only otter born at an aquarium. The other four, Luna, a 6 -year-old southern sea otter, Watson and Cooper, southern sea otters who will be 2 this year, and Kiana, a 16-year-old northern sea otter, were all rescues, much like Yaku’s father, who was rescued during the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska in 1989.
