Top-seeded Monsignor Farrell and No. 2 St. Joseph by-the-Sea were clearly the CHSAA Spring Tournament’s top A division teams since the tourney’s inception last month and now, the Lions and Vikings will get once last opportunity to see who truly is the cream of the crop.
That’s because Farrell and Sea each won their respective semifinal games on Sunday at Archbishop Stepinac HS in White Plains.
Seniors Sean Conroy (20 points) and Patrick Gardner (19 points) led a balanced attack as the Lions rolled to a 57-35 victory over No. 2 Nazareth.
Xavier Barrow, meanwhile, paced a balanced attack with 13 points, including an 11-for-12 performance from the free-throw line, to lead the Vikings to a 64-53 triumph of No. 1 St. Edmund’s.
The Lions and Vikings, who met once during pool play (Farrell squeezed out a 61-55 victory), will meet for all the marbles on Thursday (5 p.m.) at Stepinac.
Farrell 57, Nazareth 35
In addition to Conroy and Gardner’s performances, fellow senior Jack Fitzgibbons chipped in with six points and a game-high 10 rebounds against the Kingsmen.
The Lions owned a 17-7 lead after one period, but Nazareth cut its deficit to five points (17-12) before the Oakwood school got some separation thanks to a barrage of three-point shots.
In fact, Gardner opened Farrell’s second-quarter scoring with a three before Conroy nailed back-to-back shots from behind the arc to suddenly up the top seed’s lead to 14 points (26-12). Conroy later sandwiched a Robert McGarvey basket with two of his own as the Lions carried a 33-18 advantage into the lockers.
Gardner then put the Lions in complete control in the opening minutes of the second half after nailing two more threes. Farrell, in fact, outscored Nazareth 15-4 to start the third and never look back.
Rob Franolic chipped in with four points and six rebounds for the 6-0 Lions.
Sea 64, St. Edmund’s 53
The Vikings, who also received offensive contributions from Louis Aldorasi (11 points), Anthony Graziano (10 points) and Kendall Arcuri (nine points), found themselves behind the eight-ball early after the Eagles scored the first 13 points of Sunday’s contest.
However, Sea eventually righted the ship to outscore St. Edmund’s 64-40 over the remainder of the game.
Although the Vikings trailed 16-6 after one period and 34-25 at halftime, they tightened the screws defensively to limit the Brooklyn school to just eight third-quarter points. In the meantime, Graziano (eight points), Danny Marinaccio (five points) and Barrow (four points) helped ignite Sea’s offense as the Huguenot school built a 44-42 advantage entering the final eight minutes.
Christian Zanone had Sea’s only two fourth-quarter field goals when he nailed a pair of threes, but most importantly, the Vikings nailed 14 of 17 free throws in the final period. Barrow was 9 for 10 from the charity stripe while Zanone, Marinaccio and Arcuri teamed for the other five as the Vikings completed the big comeback.
Zanone and Marinaccio teamed for an additional 15 points for Sea.
