SAN FRANCISCO -- As part of their celebration of Juneteenth, the holiday marking the emancipation of those who have been enslaved in the United States, the Giants will wear special replica San Francisco Sea Lions uniforms during Saturday afternoon’s game against the Phillies at Oracle Park.
This year will mark the 75th anniversary of the Sea Lions, who played in the West Coast Negro Baseball Association for one season in 1946. The Sea Lions jerseys feature a bear cub, because they inherited their uniforms from a defunct club known as the San Francisco Cubs, and their navy blue caps contain no logo or emblem.
The family of Toni Stone, who broke baseball’s gender barrier when she became the first known woman to play on a professional men’s team, will be presented with a Sea Lions jersey to honor Stone’s legacy during a special pregame ceremony. Stone played for the Sea Lions and later joined the Indianapolis Clowns of the Negro American League in 1953.
Earlier this year, the Giants announced that a street will be named after Stone in their Mission Rock development, which is currently under construction just south of Oracle Park.
The Sea Lions jerseys worn by the Giants will be auctioned off from June 19-26, with the proceeds benefiting San Francisco Juneteenth celebrations. The Giants are also selling special event tickets for African American Heritage Day on Saturday, which include a commemorative San Francisco Sea Lions T-shirt.
