The Giants are planning to commemorate Juneteenth, the day that celebrates the emancipation of those who have been enslaved in the United States, on Saturday at Oracle Park.
The club announced Wednesday it will wear special replica uniforms of the San Francisco Sea Lions as they mark the 75th anniversary of the club that participated in the West Coast Negro Baseball Association.
The Sea Lions were active for just one season and the jerseys feature a bear cub on the front because the club purchased the uniforms from a defunct team known as the San Francisco Cubs. The Sea Lions did not have a logo or emblem on their navy blue caps.
The Giants are also planning to honor the family of Toni Stone, the first female player known to play on a professional men’s baseball team, during a pregame ceremony. Stone played for the San Francisco Sea Lions and the Indianapolis Clowns.
The club said that a street in the Mission Rock development which is currently under construction near Oracle Park will be named after Stone.
Prior to the announcement the Giants planned to commemorate Juneteenth, the club had designated Saturday as African-American Heritage Day at Oracle Park. The Giants are selling a select number of special event tickets that include a San Francisco Sea Lions shirt honoring the 1946 club.
Saturday’s game against the Phillies will not be broadcast on local cable as the weekend series is being shown exclusively on Peacock, the streaming service owned by NBC Universal.
